Note Printing Australia had the rare opportunity to honour the work of a Papua New Guinean trailblazer on Friday 21 July. Acting Governor Elizabeth Genia, whose signature appeared for the first time on the new 10 Kina banknote, was on-site last week to sign off on a second banknote - the commemorative 50 Kina celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Bank of Papua New Guinea which will be officially launched later this year.
Also in the presence of BPNG Board member Ulato Avei, our Chief Commercial Officer Blair Gibbs presented a brief history of BPNG, including its Founding Governor Sir Henry ToRobert and its six subsequent Governors, as well as a very informative and thorough insight into Acting Governor Genia’s impressive career.
The presentation was also made on the last day of the Acting Governor’s current term. Due to constitutional changes made in PNG last year, the decision on Governorship is now a political appointment. However, NPA received confirmation on Monday 24 July that her term as Acting Governor has been extended for another six-month period. The PNG Minister for Treasury, Hon. Ian Ling-Stuckey CMG MP, officially extended the new six-month term from 22 July 2023 – 22 January 2024.
In the speech, Blair also honoured NPA's first all-female crew – Jade McDonald, Yvonne Claassan, and Harneet Kaur – for the important contribution they have made to NPA’s history, and who in turn assisted with the presentation of the framed 10 Kina sheet. The plaque read:

It was a special moment, in which the Governor was overwhelmed with emotion and spoke passionately about her time at the bank, her ongoing work on gender equity issues, and the friendship and support she has enjoyed with Note Printing Australia.
"The fact that I have had the opportunity to sign our nation’s banknotes during my governorship will always be the pinnacle of my professional life. I am deeply humbled by the honour of this occasion.," she said.
Referring to BPNG’s working relationship with NPA, the Acting Governor said; “What we have right here is so much more. As with all countries with a nationally and internationally recognised currency, PNG’s banknotes are part and parcel of our national identity. And it is so important that they tell our story. The fact that a woman has now officially authorised a new story for our country is incredibly significant. The banknotes not only give certainty to parties to a financial transaction. They are also a promise that the PNG story continues to grow and develop as our society gradually moves towards equity and inclusion.”

NPA HONRA EL LOGRO DE ELIZABETH GENIA DE BPNG
Note Printing Australia (NPA) tuvo la rara oportunidad de honrar el trabajo de una pionera de Papúa Nueva Guinea (PNG) el viernes 21 de julio. La Gobernadora interina, Elizabeth Genia, cuya firma apareció por primera vez en el nuevo billete de 10 Kina, estuvo presente la semana pasada para firmar un segundo billete: el de 50 Kina conmemorativo que celebra el 50º aniversario del Banco de Papúa Nueva Guinea, que se lanzará oficialmente a finales de este año.
También en presencia de Ulato Avei, miembro de la Junta de BPNG, nuestro director comercial, Blair Gibbs, presentó una breve historia de BPNG, que abarcó desde su Gobernador Fundador, Sir Henry ToRobert, hasta sus seis Gobernadores posteriores, así como una visión muy informativa y exhaustiva de la impresionante carrera profesional de la Gobernadora interina Genia.
La presentación también se realizó el último día del actual mandato de la Gobernadora interina. Debido a los cambios constitucionales realizados en PNG el año pasado, la decisión sobre la gobernación es ahora un nombramiento político. Sin embargo, NPA recibió la confirmación el lunes 24 de julio de que su mandato como gobernadora interina se había prorrogado por otro período de seis meses. El Ministro de Hacienda de PNG, Excmo. Ian Ling-Stuckey CMG MP, extendió oficialmente el nuevo mandato de seis meses del 22 de julio de 2023 al 22 de enero de 2024.

Refiriéndose a la relación de trabajo de BPNG con NPA, la Gobernadora interina dijo; “Lo que tenemos aquí es mucho más. Como ocurre con todos los países con una moneda reconocida a nivel nacional e internacional, los billetes de PNG son parte integrante de nuestra identidad nacional. Y es muy importante que cuenten nuestra historia. El hecho de que una mujer haya autorizado oficialmente una nueva historia para nuestro país es increíblemente significativo. Los billetes no sólo dan seguridad a las partes en una transacción financiera. También son una promesa de que la historia de PNG continúa creciendo y desarrollándose a medida que nuestra sociedad avanza gradualmente hacia la equidad y la inclusión”.
